History

North Kirkwood Middle School (NKMS) was built in 1957 as a junior high school for students in Grades 7, 8 and 9. In 1976, the district began a reorganization and the junior high school became a middle school for grades 6 through 8. The building has been expanded and renovated in 1993, 2005, and 2010.

NKMS is proud of its students and dedicated staff who, with incredible parent and community involvement and support, have created an exceptional learning community. Our school is nationally recognized as a Blue Ribbon School and a Missouri Gold Star School. NKMS has also been named a "Champion for Character" award winner and was a recipient of the PBIS Bronze Level award for incorporating service learning and positive behavior reward systems throughout our school.

North Kirkwood Middle School has a school-wide focus on literacy in all content areas by embedding effective reading, writing, communication, problem finding/solving and critical thinking skills and strategies in every classroom. It is our goal to make sure students are not only prepared to live in our world today, but that we help engrain the skills they will need for a future we cannot yet imagine. Through endeavors like Pursuit Week, where students delve into a self-selected topic for one full week of school, we strive to connect all students to their learning and to understanding their value in this global world.
